Transit Technology, Innovation, and Building Trust in Public Agencies

Transit Technology, Innovation, and Building Trust in Public Agencies

The evolution of transit technology has changed how public agencies operate, according to ETA founder and CEO John Maglio. In a discussion on the subject, Maglio examined the path that transit systems have taken over the years and what those changes mean for the agencies that run them.

Maglio pointed to reliability as a central concern. Riders depend on transit systems to get to work, school, and appointments, and technology that fails or behaves unpredictably erodes that trust quickly. He argued that dependable systems are not a luxury but a baseline requirement for any agency that wants to keep passengers coming back.

Beyond reliability, Maglio stressed the value of stronger partnerships between technology providers and the agencies they serve. When vendors work closely with transit staff, they can better understand daily operational realities and build tools that fit actual needs rather than theoretical ones. That kind of collaboration, he said, helps agencies improve operations and deliver a smoother experience for passengers.

Innovation also came up as a theme. Maglio described how new approaches to transit technology can help agencies respond to shifting demand and manage their systems more effectively. The key is pairing innovation with practical support so that agencies can adopt new tools without disrupting service.

The conversation ultimately centered on trust. Maglio noted that building agency trust takes time and consistent results, and that technology partners have a responsibility to deliver both.
