China plans to restrict exports of 12 solar manufacturing technologies starting in 2026, a move that could reshape global supply chains and push panel prices higher. The measures target advanced production methods and key equipment used in making high efficiency solar cells and modules, according to details released by trade authorities.
The restricted list covers processes such as tunnel oxide passivated contact cells, heterojunction production, and several next generation coating and cutting techniques. Companies will need special approval before transferring these technologies abroad or building overseas plants that rely on them.
China dominates global solar manufacturing, producing most of the world's polysilicon, wafers, cells, and modules. Analysts say the export controls are meant to keep the country's most advanced production know how at home while slowing the rise of competing manufacturing hubs in Southeast Asia, the United States, and Europe.
For buyers, the immediate effect may be limited because the rules take effect in 2026. But developers and installers worry about longer term costs. If overseas factories cannot access the newest Chinese equipment, they may produce lower efficiency panels or face delays, which could tighten supply and lift prices in markets racing to meet renewable energy targets.
Industry groups are watching how strictly Beijing enforces the approvals. Some manufacturers may shift to older technology lines abroad, while others could accelerate their own research efforts. Either way, the policy adds uncertainty to a solar sector already dealing with volatile material prices and changing trade rules in major economies.
