Israel has relied on artificial intelligence assisted technology to destroy infrastructure in Gaza, building on a surveillance and policing system in Occupied Palestine that dates back to the 2010s. During that period, facial recognition tools were tested at checkpoints, and large information databases were developed through cyber warfare programs.
As Israel continues its most recent campaign in Gaza and the West Bank, the occupation heavily depends on AI assisted tools, much of it funded by the United States. In the first two months after October 7, reports indicated that AI systems helped generate targets at a speed and scale that overwhelmed human review. These tools were used to identify buildings, tunnels, and other sites later struck by airstrikes.
The result has been widespread destruction across Gaza. Entire neighborhoods have been reduced to rubble, with schools, hospitals, water systems, and residential blocks damaged or destroyed. Critics argue that automated targeting blurs accountability, since decisions once made by humans are increasingly delegated to software.
Palestinian rights groups and international observers have raised concerns that these technologies entrench a system of control and make it harder to distinguish between military and civilian objects. The long term impact on Gaza's infrastructure and civilian population remains severe, with reconstruction facing enormous obstacles.
