The accelerating development of artificial intelligence is changing the value of certain skills, the long-term outlook of certain careers and what aspiring IT professionals should do to stay ahead of the curve.
For years, students entering IT programs could count on a familiar path. Learn to code, manage systems, troubleshoot networks and move up through predictable roles. That path is now less certain. AI tools can write code, diagnose common technical problems and automate routine tasks that once served as entry points for new graduates.
Universities are responding by rethinking what they teach. Some programs are placing greater emphasis on areas where human judgment still matters, such as system design, security, ethics and the ability to work alongside AI rather than compete with it. Others are pushing students toward interdisciplinary skills, combining technical training with communication, project management and domain knowledge in fields like health care or finance.
The shift also affects faculty and staff. IT departments on campuses are experimenting with AI assisted workflows, which changes the day to day responsibilities of support teams and administrators. Roles that focus on maintaining legacy systems may shrink, while positions involving data governance, integration and oversight of AI tools are growing.
For students, the message is not that IT careers are disappearing. It is that the entry level is moving. Those who graduate with only narrow technical skills may struggle. Those who can adapt, learn continuously and understand how AI fits into larger organizational goals will find opportunities expanding rather than contracting. Higher education institutions that fail to adjust their curricula risk sending graduates into a job market that no longer matches what they were taught.
