Samsung, LG Uplus Team Up to Develop ISAC Technology for Next-Gen 6G Networks

Samsung Electronics and LG Uplus have announced a new partnership to develop Integrated Sensing and Communication, or ISAC, technology aimed at shaping the future of 6G networks. The collaboration will focus on creating a system that combines wireless communication with radar-like sensing capabilities, allowing networks to detect objects, movement, and environmental changes in real time.

ISAC is considered a key enabler for next-generation networks because it turns base stations into dual-purpose tools. Instead of just transmitting data, they can also function as high-precision sensors. This could support applications such as autonomous driving, drone management, and smart factory automation, where knowing the exact position and speed of objects is critical.

The two companies plan to jointly research and standardize the technology. Samsung will contribute its expertise in radio frequency and signal processing, while LG Uplus will provide insights from its mobile network operations. The goal is to test ISAC in real-world environments and eventually integrate it into commercial 6G infrastructure.

Both firms see this as a strategic move to lead the global race for 6G standardization, which is expected to begin in earnest around 2025. While 5G is still expanding, telecom leaders are already laying the groundwork for the next leap in connectivity. ISAC is one of several candidate technologies that could define 6G, alongside terahertz frequencies and AI-driven network management.

Samsung and LG Uplus have not disclosed a specific timeline for commercial deployment, but they aim to demonstrate a working prototype within the next few years.
