MIT Program Connects Technical Students with Tulsa Communities

A university internship initiative is broadening how engineering and data science students understand the social impact of their work. The program places participants with tribal nations and local nonprofits throughout Tulsa, Oklahoma, where they build artificial intelligence and data science tools while learning how technology shapes community life.

The effort, an expansion of an existing partnership, pairs technical skill building with a focus on the humanities. Students spend their time developing practical projects requested by host organizations, but they also examine the cultural, ethical, and historical dimensions of the systems they create. Organizers say this combination helps future technologists see their work as part of a larger social fabric rather than a purely technical exercise.

A central piece of the initiative is a STEM boot camp designed for Indigenous youth. The camp introduces young participants to advanced science topics through hands-on activities, with the goal of building confidence and opening pathways to further study. Interns often serve as mentors, creating a two-way exchange where university students learn from the communities they serve.
