Massachusetts transportation officials say a network of wrong-way driving detection systems installed since June has already identified more than 215 incidents across the state. The program, which now includes 86 active detection sites, represents a significant expansion of efforts to curb one of the most dangerous types of highway crashes.
The systems use sensors and cameras mounted at highway ramps to spot vehicles entering in the wrong direction. When a wrong-way vehicle is detected, the technology triggers warning signs and alerts transportation and law enforcement personnel, giving them a chance to respond before a collision occurs. Officials say the rapid pace of detections, more than 200 in just a few months, underscores how common wrong-way entries are and how valuable the technology can be.
Safety advocates have long pointed to wrong-way crashes as particularly deadly because they often involve head-on collisions at highway speeds. The state has been rolling out the systems at ramps identified as high-risk locations based on crash history and traffic patterns. Transportation officials say the data collected will help them evaluate where additional systems may be needed and refine how alerts are handled.
The detection program is part of a broader push to use new technology to reduce serious injuries and fatalities on Massachusetts roads. Officials have not said how many of the flagged incidents resulted in actual wrong-way travel versus brief or mistaken entries, but they note that each alert gives responders a chance to intervene. Further expansion of the network is expected as the state reviews results from the first months of operation.
