Charleston, W.Va. - Kanawha County Schools is moving forward with a pilot program at Horace Mann Middle School that will test a classroom audio enhancement system designed to improve student engagement, amplify teachers' voices and help students overcome language barriers.
The Kanawha County Board of Education reviewed a purchase order Thursday totaling $237,727.67 for equipment and integration services from Audio Enhancement. The proposal covers the installation of classroom audio systems that distribute a teacher's voice evenly throughout the room, allowing students to hear instruction more clearly regardless of where they sit.
District officials said the technology could be particularly valuable for students still learning English, as the system includes translation features that can deliver lessons in multiple languages in real time. Supporters argue that clearer audio reduces strain on teachers and cuts down on classroom disruptions caused by repeated instructions.
The pilot at Horace Mann Middle will serve as a test case before the district considers expanding the system to other schools. Board members did not immediately vote on the purchase order during Thursday's meeting, and further discussion is expected at a future session. If approved, installation could begin later this school year, with district staff monitoring results and gathering feedback from teachers and students throughout the pilot period.
