Amkor Technology is moving forward with a major expansion of its semiconductor facility in Peoria, increasing the plant's footprint from 104 acres to 171 acres. The move follows a land purchase completed last week, signaling the company's long-term commitment to the site. The factory, which represents a $7 billion investment, is expected to create approximately 3,000 new jobs as part of the growth plan.
The expansion comes at a time when demand for advanced chip packaging and testing services continues to rise. Amkor's Peoria facility plays a key role in the domestic semiconductor supply chain, and the added space will allow for increased production capacity. Company officials said the additional acreage will support new manufacturing lines and infrastructure improvements.
Local economic development leaders have welcomed the news, noting that the job creation will have a significant impact on the region. The positions are expected to range from skilled technical roles to engineering and support staff. Construction on the expanded site is slated to begin in the coming months, with the first phase of operations targeted for completion by late 2025.
